boehner. nobody thinks that eric cantor is going to be a kinder and gentler face for the republican party. you know, there was palace intrigue. there was quiet movement among conservatives to vacate the chair which means they would have voted against john boehner. and if they got more than 16 to vote against john boehner, then the chair is vacated. you need a majority. and they had the votes, people that were willing to vote against john boehner to take him down as speaker, but then they looked around and said, who's going to replace him? and there was nobody to replace him. so john boehner will continue to be speaker of the house. but there is movement afoot. and they had the votes to do it. they just didn't have anybody to replace him. >> but remember, they've got a constituency problem. a lot of americans care a lot about the second amendment. a lot of americans might want sensible changes in crime control laws but not wholesale changes in the way guns are l regulated. and a handful of congressmen were elected where the president won. they're not a 10% party. they may be a 10% po

$500,000 on this debate, i think barack obama has a chance to do what eric cantor told bob woodward after he met him the first time, which is if he's pragmatic, if he comes to the middle, then he could lock us republicans up for a very long time. i mean, i think that's the great challenge for barack obama. >> yeah. >> can he do what he appears to be doing right now with john boehner? and that is upsetting a lot of people in his own base for the betterment of their party by saying we're going to raise it from $250,000 to maybe $500,000, go after entitlements and do it for the best interests of the country. >> he is a pragmatist. the first two years, it was such a strained situation. when we talked to him on wednesday, everything he said was about -- he wasn't saying government has to be bigger. government has to be smarter. government has to be better. it was like the lincoln line. this is a fantastic picture, by the way. >> that is adorable. >> joe, that's one of the pictures i was talking about. >> you're letting us know, these are all exclusive to "morning joe." >> they're exclusive to

favor of the bill. house majority leader eric cantor and majority whip kevin mccarthy joined the majority of republicans in voting no. however, boehner did find support from his party's former vice presidential candidate, congressman paul ryan. >> bob costa, let me bring you in here. i'm obviously surprisesed th ee the republicans passed tax increases for the first time in 20 years with a bill that doesn't cut a dime in spending, that adds $4 trillion to the national debt, and that actually could have been so much better with a little bit of house leadership going months back, not weeks back, not days back, months back. they knew this day was coming. i've got to believe some conservative members in the house are obviously very concerned about john boehner as their leader. >> sure, but to beat boehner, you have to have a challenger. and last night, joe, i was at the capitol. it was a fascinating scene. i think the paul ryan story is an important baun because boehner's on the ropes. he can't get plan b through the house. he comes over to the house, boehner's trying to find consensu

exceptional to me. and it says, you know, exactly -- >> even though eric cantor was right there probably helping him out? >> but that's the thing is he had eric cantor there, which should have given him the cover. now, you know, at some point john boehner has to make a decision, which is do i let these people dictate what type of legislation we're going to put to this body, or will i get rid of this informal role that anything i let come to a vote has to have the majority of the majority, which means that a majority of republicans have to vote on the bill for it to pass. because that's really the only resolution to this deal is can he -- will he pass a deal that will have a lot of democratic support in the house? >> and is, as i look at next week and the fiscal cliff presumably happening, going over it, john boehner is supposed to be re-elected speaker on next thursday. >> on the 3rd, yeah. >> is that going to change everything and he's going to say, to hell with this right-wing tail wagging my dog, i don't need you guys anymore? >> no, because the house isn't the only theater of this. t
